Abstract

A kind of new power transmission technology--HVDC light, is introduced in this paper, which is based on the conventional HVDC technology with VSC and IGBT as its main components. The basic principle, technology characteristics and modeling methods of HVDC light are summarized, followed by a comparison of HVDC light with conventional HVDC. Some applications of HVDC light abroad and the current development in China is briefly introduced. The main research areas at the present time are pointed out and the application prospects for HVDC light are predicted.
